Questions Customers Ask Us About Our Eavestroughing

Oak Wood Texture

With all the crazy weather in Calgary eavestroughing is a must. These FAQ’s might help you feel confident about your investment.

What Do Eavestroughs Do?

Eavestroughs protect your home from rainwater by carrying it away from the foundation. Without eavestroughs, your home is almost certain to experience water damage over time due to rain, snow, and hail.

Moving water away from your building preserves the lifespan of the building and its envelope. It also prevents a lot of unnecessary damage!

When Should You Replace Your Eavestroughs?

In Calgary, properly installed eavestroughs should last for 15-20 years. However, the lifespan of your eavestroughs can vary depending on how they were installed and the health of the fascia boards.

How Do Eavestroughs Get Damaged & How Can You Protect Them?

Calgary eavestroughs typically become damaged in the following ways:

  • Impact damage from hail storms
  • Detaching from the home when overloaded with debris
  • Warping from repeated freeze/thaw cycles
  • Bending/creasing due to wind

You can also opt to have ALU-Rex leafguards installed with your new eavestroughing, which catch debris instead of letting it settle in your eavestroughing and are rated to hold up to 250 lbs per linear foot.

Finally, remember to clean debris out of your eavestroughs on a regular basis (unless you have ALU-Rex installed, in which case you probably won’t ever need to).

What Kind of Eavestroughs Does Your Home Need?

Most eavestroughs in Calgary are either 5” or 6” wide. The kind you need depends on what your roof is made of, its slope, and its size.

Roof types that need eavestroughs at least 6″ wide include:

  • Tile
  • Metal
  • Wood shakes (pine or cedar)
  • Rubber

5″ wide eavestroughs can be used for residential wood made with regular asphalt laminate shingles. However, many homeowners opt for 6” eavestroughs anyway, because they can carry nearly twice as much water and generally look better.

How Long Will My Eavestrough Installation Take?

Every job is different, but our turnaround time for installing new eavestroughs on most homes is about 3 days—from the time we give you your quote to the time we complete the job.

We source our materials from local companies and then measure, cut, and install your eavestroughs on site—eliminating manufacturer delays and avoiding supply chain issues.

Should You Install Eavestroughs Yourself?

We don’t recommend this. There are some eavestroughs you can install yourself, but you have to purchase them in sections with pre-set lengths and cut them to match your home. This leaves numerous seams and points of failure. It also doesn’t look as good as the seamless eavestroughs our professionals install.

Installing your eavestroughs by yourself also leaves you unable to benefit from any warranty offered by a professional contractor. Big 5 offers a 5-year installation warranty on all products we sell, plus a 50-year manufacturer materials warranty.

How Often Should You Clean Your Eavestroughs?

We recommend that most homeowners clean their eavestroughs at least once each year.

For best results, clean your eavestroughs once in the fall. Note: we do not offer eavestrough cleaning services.

Should You Paint Your Eavestroughs?

You can paint your eavestroughs, but you really shouldn’t. Eaves can come in many colours and be colour matched to your application. We will help you with colour selection and help you get an idea of what your options are.

Painting your eavestroughs won’t damage them, but the new paint job is unlikely to adhere well to the aluminium eaves (and there’s a good chance you’ll accidentaly wind up painting your fascia, soffit, and siding as well… oops!).

Safe , professional, site was always clean. No chatting, no music, just 2 quality tradesmen getting the project done. They noticed a couple spots on second story where the caulk was letting go…they noticed and they fixed…i wouldn’t have known if I didn’t see them. Site was cleaned up like nothing happened.
